A short history of the bus industry in Queensland PDF Print E-mail

The Queensland bus industry has an interesting and chequered history.

According to the Queensland Department of Transport’s Annual Report 2003-04 Queensland has over 47,000 authorised drivers of public transport, has 181,000km of road network (34,600 of which is controlled by the State Government), 39 performances based urban bus contracts and 15 long-distance bus contracts, 1,260 school bus contracts and 59 rural and remote communities that are directly supported by subsidised long-distance bus services. On any given day in Queensland in excess of 644,000 passenger trips are made on public transport.

Throughout Australia the bus and coach industry is made up of more than 3,000 businesses which employ over 30,000 people across the country. In any given year, over $2 billion is invested in public transport operations and the industry collectively transports close to 1 billion commuters annually all over the nation.

According to a report released by the School Transport Safety Taskforce, school bus travel has been found to be the safest mode of travel to and from school by road. This is in addition to findings of the Federal Office of Road Safety in 1998 which found per passenger kilometre, bus travel is the safest form of road travel in Australia.

Bus Travel, the smart, safe alternative.
